Man did I get a lot of crap from readers out there because of my last update. I was merely trying to point out that studio time, even at a small place like here adds up quick. In the old days bands would have a budget from the record company and have to get things done in that time frame. Even the Beatles had a certain budget they had to stick to. The Ramones are the perfect examples of a record labels dream come true. Go in, record the songs in a little more then the record would be. No overdubs, just redo if a mistake was made. One of the bands that spent almost 45 hours here rehearsing 3 songs were complaining because they did not know where they would get the money for a better PA system. A, duh! I'm sorry I ticked of so many of you, but I also received quite a few "way to go" from bands that understand time frames and a budget. Hey, I'm greedy so I will take the money anyway I can but the moral side of me still feels like I'm ripping these guys off.

The studio has been awash with musicians checking out the place. It is really amazing to me ( Don't get me wrong I love the work) that people will plunk down large sums of money to rehearse here in the studio. I try and do my best to get a reasonable idea of what they are looking for but sometimes come up short handed. The other day a band of four (no names will be mentioned) came in and said they wanted to lay down 8 tunes. Then they spent the next 3 hours deciding which 8. Then they spent an hour rehearsing said 8 songs. I love the work and the money but it seems like such a waste of time and money for these bands. I did tell them that they should have these things worked out before coming into the studio. I was told that musicians have their own time table and they will not be rushed into doing something half-assed and they packed and left. Now they will go somewhere else and do the same thing and waste even more time because of their attitude. The good news is I get 4 hours of time paid to the studio so I can continue to work with bands that do really want to get something done. Maybe I'm getting to old for this or I missed the "waste everyones time" memo. |
